Since 1839, a inn has been located at the site of Van der Valk Hotel Hardegarijp - Leeuwarden, which has had several owners over the years and evolved into a hotel. In 1957, it was taken over by Adrianus van der Valk. In the early sixties, a house painter worked on painting jobs in his spare time, including touching up Frisian sayings on the ceiling beams. In 2007, these sayings, hidden between two ceilings, were rediscovered and made visible again.
